Vinyl, LVT or Laminate ... What's right for your space?

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at flooring samples thinking “they all look great… but what’s actually the difference?” - you’re not alone. With so many hard flooring options available, choosing the right one can feel a little overwhelming. The good news, each product has its own strengths and once you understand where they shine, the decision becomes much clearer - let’s break it down.

Sheet Vinyl - ‘versatile, seamless and quietly high-performing’

Sheet vinyl has evolved significantly in recent years. Think refined designs, seamless finishes and a more comfortable feel
underfoot.

Why consider sheet vinyl:
-Design flexibility - from natural timber looks to statement patterns, there’s real scope to create something unique
-Seamless installation - can be coved and joins welded, supporting an easier compliance pathway where required
-Comfort - a slightly cushioned feel underfoot, ideal for spaces like bathrooms or areas where people stand for longer periods
-Durability - suitable for both residential and commercial environments, with wear layers up to 0.7mm
Where it works best:
Kitchens, bathrooms, healthcare, education and high traffic spaces where performance and practicality are key.

LVT - ‘the design all-rounder’

LVT remains a favourite for good reason. It delivers the look of timber or tile, with the added benefits of durability and ease of maintenance.

Why designers love it:
-Highly realistic finishes - authentic textures, embossing and a wide variety of plank and tile designs
-Low maintenance - no grout, no sealing, and easy day-to-day care
-Waterproof - well suited to kitchens, laundries and splash-prone areas
-Repair-friendly - individual planks can be replaced if needed (we always recommend keeping a few spare)

A few considerations:
Avoid steam mops, as they can damage the surface and impact the adhesive system.
In areas with strong natural light, window coverings can help minimise fading over time.

Acoustic LVT - ‘comfort meets performance’

Acoustic LVT offers all the benefits of traditional LVT, with the added advantage of sound reduction – ideal for creating quieter, more comfortable interiors.

What sets it apart:
-Sound absorption – helps soften noise within a space, making it ideal for apartments, hospitality or busy family homes
-Dimensional stability – 2 fibreglass layers support performance in New Zealand’s variable climate

-Considered sustainability – manufactured with a minimum of 24% recycled content and a focus on long-term environmental responsibility

Good to know:
Acoustic LVT is designed to be glued down rather than loose laid, ensuring optimal performance.

Laminate - ‘a smart solution for sun-filled spaces’

Laminate is a strong performer, particularly in areas with high levels of natural light.

Why it’s worth considering:
-Fade resistance – a more reliable option for sunny interiors where other products may be more prone to colour change
-Water-resistant systems – suitable for splash areas when installed with the correct system
-Sustainable manufacturing – produced using recycled wood, clean energy and responsibly sourced materials
It also offers a crisp, realistic timber aesthetic with excellent durability for busy households.

Designed with flexibility in mind
All laminate designs within our range have been colour matched to a corresponding sheet vinyl and LVT option. This allows for a cohesive look to be carried throughout a project, while selecting the most appropriate product for each space.

A considered approach to wet areas
While laminate can perform well in splash-prone areas, it’s worth considering how the space is actually used. Everyday splashes are one thing – but if the reality looks more like a nightly 10L bath overflow, a fully waterproof solution such as sheet vinyl or LVT may be the more suitable choice.

Keep in mind:
Laminate requires allowance for expansion and contraction, making correct installation essential.

Key considerations across vinyl and laminate options.

While each product has its own strengths, these considerations apply to both vinyl and laminate flooring.

-Comfort underfoot
Both vinyl and laminate offer everyday comfort underfoot, with warmth and performance influenced by construction, backing systems and ambient room temperatures.
-Easy, low-maintenance living
Day-to-day care is simple across vinyl and laminate - regular sweeping or vacuuming, paired with a pH neutral cleaner, will keep floors looking their best.
-Rubber contact
Rubber can cause permanent staining on vinyl and laminate floorcoverings. We recommend avoiding rubber‑backed mats, furniture feet, castors or footwear with rubber soles to help protect the surface.
-Underfloor heating compatibility
Vinyl and laminate products are suitable for use with in‑slab underfloor heating systems, supporting year‑round comfort when installed correctly. We recommend a maximum surface temperature of 27 °C for vinyl and 26 °C for laminate to ensure optimal long‑term performance.

So, which one should you choose?

The right flooring choice ultimately comes down to how the space will be used, and what matters most for your project.
-For seamless, compliant and cushioned spaces – sheet vinyl is a strong, practical solution
-For design flexibility and everyday durability – LVT offers an excellent balance
-For enhanced acoustic comfort – acoustic LVT is well worth considering
-For busy households seeking a resilient, low‑maintenance timber look, laminate is a smart and dependable choice

With a clear understanding of each option, selecting the right product becomes a more considered decision, and feels intentional, informed and fit for purpose
